About

I am a mom whose son was completely debilitated by severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. Our family floundered and then fought our way through a disorienting maze of treatments and programs, desperately trying to find the best help possible for Dan.

I have since become an advocate for OCD awareness, with the goal of spreading the word that obsessive-compulsive disorder, no matter how severe, is treatable, and the first line psychological treatment is exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. I use a pseudonym to protect my son’s privacy.

My book, Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery (Rowman & Littlefield, January 2015) recounts my family’s story, and is interwoven throughout with expert commentary by Seth Gillihan, PhD. I am published regularly on Psych Central and have been published on many other web sites including the Anxiety and Depression Association of America , Mad In America, and Beyond OCD. I’ve been the keynote speaker at OCD and NAMI conferences, and have spoken at other OCD conferences as well.

As for my son Dan,  he is now a college graduate working in his chosen field and living life to the fullest.  He is living proof that those with OCD can not only recover, but triumph.

Though I have learned a lot along the way, I am not an expert on OCD. If you or a loved one is dealing with this disorder, my advice is to find a competent therapist who specializes in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder.
